“Come on, Hugo,” Jasmine whispered as the cameras reset. “You’ve got this. Remember what we practiced. It’ll be really funny.”

That made Hugo feel a little better, except that he wasn’t Hugo anymore, he reminded himself. He was Marshmallow! Because he was method acting! And as far as he was concerned, Jasmine wasn’t Jasmine! She was Marshmallow’s owner, and her name was Hot-Cocoa Lady.

“Take 2!” someone shouted.

“Aaand action!”

I need to hit my cues this time, he thought. But how would MARSHMALLOW hit those cues? WHY is Marshmallow standing up and spinning around . . . ?

“I SAID . . . Happy holidays, you goofs!” Jasmine practically yelled, gesturing wildly with her arms toward Hugo and giving him the same look that his mom gave Enrique when Enrique was about to be late for the bus.

Oh dog! I must have missed my cue again, Hugo realized. Jasmine had said her line twice now, and Hugo had completely left her hanging. He knew Jasmine was trying for a “bigger” comedic performance in this scene, and she had told him that morning that it wouldn’t work if she was the only one doing the physical comedy. He needed to do his trick for the moment to work. But before Hugo could fix everything and do his funny spin move—

“CUT!” Alan yelled again. “What was that? The dogs were all looking off into space and the Hot-Cocoa Lady is totally hamming it up.”

“Oh, we were going to do a thing where—” Jasmine started to explain.

“We don’t have time, I’m sorry,” Alan said, looking at his watch. “Let’s try it again! Aaand action!”

Hugo felt terrible for messing everything up. He knew that this time, he had to focus.

“Hot cocoa!” Jasmine called out. Hugo sat down right away, but he tried to do it in the most Marshmallow way he could think of.

Then Hugo thought that Marshmallow might want to lie down. Maybe Marshmallow has never seen a train station before, so he’s tired from all the new sights and sounds! So Hugo lay down on the pavement. They reached the point in the scene when Mirabelle was supposed to cock her head to the side playfully. But Mirabelle was just staring at Hugo, confused.
